"Shour, Aloof and Obnoxious" (shour)

...time speeds up. When you’re only five, a year is 20% of your life. At age 25, it’s only four percent of your life, and the relative perspective makes the time feel shorter. And yet, so much can happen in one short year.
Yesterday was the last official day of school (for teachers) in my school district, making today the first day of summer break. On this day last year:
-I was not a homeowner
-I did not have an assistant band director
-I had a significant other (look, I’m almost 40 and I just can’t call someone my “girlfriend” anymore without feeling like a seventh grader)
-I hadn’t gotten a First Division on stage at UIL
-I was teaching out of the Book of Job instead of James
-I could deadlift 300 lbs
-I was not yet confident enough in my abilities to apply for LTC
-I still had wisdom teeth
-My father was still teaching in the public school system and was driving a 1st-gen CTS
-I was driving an NB (car related!)
A year later, and none of those things are the same. All those changes, and it feels like almost no time has passed. A year is still a long time, because lots can still happen in a year, but somehow I still look at the calendar and think, “How the heck is school over already? July felt like just the other day.”
Sorry for the formatting (or lack thereof) on the list. Kinja mobile. :p

Posted about it here. Good for reading when you’re camped out in the smallest room in the house and no magazine.
